A Killing Sky A Frank Pavlicek Mystery eBook Andy Straka

Ex-cop and avid falconer Frank Pavlicek is hired by the daughter of a philandering Virginia Congressman to find her missing twin sister. Is her disappearance related to her disintegrating relationship with her boyfriend? Or is it somehow connected to her ambitious father’s re-election campaign, a tawdry sex scandal, and a hit-and-run accident that happened twenty years ago? Pavlicek’s investigation unearths long-buried secrets that someone would like to keep six feet under…along with the PI’s corpse.
The second novel in the blockbuster Frank Pavlicek series. An Anthony, Shamus, and Agatha Award nominee.
"Pavlicek is a breath of fresh air in the field of private eye fiction." Jeffery Deaver
"Highly recommended. I dare you to tell me I’m wrong," Michael Connelly
"A book this good, and this original, helps remind me why started I reading mysteries in the first place," Steve Hamilton
"Storytelling as sharp and strong as talons," Rick Riordan

Andy Straka A Killing Sky
A sister finds her sister missing and hires Charlottesville Private Eye Frank Pavlicek, and ex-police officer whose hobby is falconry. The sister, the mother and a friend find they must hide from all investigators, including the police, and leave Pavlicek to investigate as he sees fit.
Their father of the sisters is a congressman in the midst of the battle of his political life; his extramarital affairs promise to ruin him and his favorite charity appears faulty. Pavlicek has a close yet tenuous relationship with the local police and an uneasy one with the Congressman’s toughs. His partner is a recluse who only comes out of his “paradise” when Pavlicek calls and then, after many heroic feats, slides back into his shadow-life.
The mystery has a standard plot which I had hoped would involve falconry. It didn’t. But, it’s ok, for the nights where there is nothing of interest on the many channels of consumerism and it’s raining.

A Killing Sky A Frank Pavlicek Mystery eBook Andy Straka Reviews
I did enjoy learning about falcons and falconers, but the story didn't quite come together for me. It seemed contrived and sort of thrown together to get to the desired ending. I also didn't feel that the characters were developed enough, but I would try this author again if he brings his falcons along.
The hero of the story is a former cop who is now a P.I.
Gee, that's a new one. However, this guy trains and hunts with raptors. Just for fun.
The daughter of a wealthy businessman disappears, and it seems she's been kidnapped. But there's no ransom demand.
As the story unfolds, the past has lots of hidden twists.
Pretty good read.
Have you ever tried to pull into the traffic lane using an underpowered vehicle? Gosh, I would really like this vehicle if it just had a little more ump. Straka has a good outline story plot that needed some excitement to make it click. Frank Pavlicek, Straka's main character is a private investigator who takes a case with little enthusiasm. Frank's friends also have a negative take on the client. There are hints of bad things that might happen and bad people in high places, but not much to keep you on edge. You find that you are nearly at your final destination before your cruising in the fast lane. Good material that just needs that extra kick to get it above average.
A Killing Sky had the foundation of a good detective story and an enjoyable mystery. The first and last few pages held my attention very well. But the middle 200+ pages were repititious, tedious, and quite boring, with not much happening to move the story along. Two stars only.
This was a fine-tuned mystery. Congratulations to Andy Straka for providing us with Frank Pavlicek and Jake Toronto. Toronto is to Pavlicek what Joe Pike is to Elvis Cole ("World's Greatest Detective"). If you love Robert Crais, you will understand. If you haven't read Crais, you're missing out. I love Pavlicek, and I'm starting his third book when I place this next period.
Frank Pavlicek has many traits of the macho, hard boiled investigator. I started out skeptical because too much of that gets old for me. But then, in the midst of all the action, he is so loving and thoughtful with his girlfriend. Watch carefully and you'll see a really nice man being quite human without letting that crimp his style getting his jobs done. The falconry fits in really well, too, even though I thought it was just a gimmick at first. Give this guy a chance. I think you'll be glad you did.
I've been reading big name authors for years, waiting impatiently for the next book to come out. My kids bought me a , so I thought why not expand my library a bit. I found a couple authors I liked, but light reading, nothing that I couldn't walk away from for a day or two. I had about given up looking for a book that really hooked me when I discovered this book. So nice to read a book that is fast paced with enough twists and turns to keep you going. His descriptions of a scene are short but effective, and let you "see" perfectly without a long-winded paragraph that makes you want to skip pages. I will definitely be buying the rest of the series. Thank you, Andy.
